demung

Demung is one of the gamelan instruments including balungan family.
In one set of gamelan usually there are 2 demung, both have versions pelog and slendro. Demung produce tones with the lowest octave in balungan family, with a larger physical size. Demung have wilahan relatively thinner but wider than wilahan saron, so that it produces a lower tone. Tabuh demung usually made of wood, with a shape like a hammer, bigger and heavier than of percussion saron.
There is the usual way menabuhnya appropriate tone, the tone returns, or beating alternately between demung demung 1 and 2, to produce fabric of varying tone, but follow a certain pattern. Fast slow and weak penabuhan hard depending on the command of the drum and the type gendhingnya. In gendhing Gangsaran describing the condition of war for example, demung sounded loud and fast. In a nuanced gendhing military Gati, demung sounded slow but hard. When accompanying the song sounded softly. When being in a state of return, then beat fast and hard.
